A Volunteer Respite Program for Medically Involved Children

Take a break recruits volunteer nurses and other with experience and a desire to care for children with medical technology and disabilities. Volunteers will be screened and assessed for the best match possible for the child and family. The volunteers will be trained in providing the child's care by the parent or caregiver and will provide the care necessary for the child during the period of time to parent or caregiver is away. Typically, a respite shift will be 2-4 hours at a time with a frequency of 1-2 times per week.

Respite care provides parents and caregivers with a temporary break from providing care for their child with chronic medical needs and disabilities. Take a break is unique because the respite care is provided by volunteers. The literature shows that respite services provide significant benefits to families and is the number one reported unmet need. Respite supports the family by alleviating stress, improving family stability, and making a positive difference in the lives of children and families.

Take a break is looking for volunteers who would be willing to enroll with the program and provide 2-4 volunteer hours per week. The families and children we serve have a variety of medical complexities. We are aiming to recruit volunteer nurses and others with experience and compassion in caring for children with medical technology and disabilities.
